How I became a celebrity nutritionist: Keri Glassman

Keri Glassman has come full circle from her early days in ad sales at Sports Illustrated, now with her own thriving practice as a celebrity nutritionist. With legions of clients and media appearances everywhere from the Today Show to The View, Glassman has also created her own online nutrition school to educate and train the next generation of dietitians and nutritionists.
USA TODAY College caught up with Glassman to talk all things almond milk, Prince, and opening her own practice.
What's your coffee order?
I make my coffee at 真人百家家乐官网网站home. I'm a coffee lover -- I love organic coffee with unsweetened almond milk or whole, organic traditional milk. That's it.
Who's your biggest mentor?
One of the reasons I started an online nutrition school is because I was starting out in my career, searching for that person who could be my mentor in nutrition and media, but I never really had that early on. That inspired me to create the nutrition school to mentor other young health and wellness professionals.
Throughout my career I've had a lot of different mentors and inspiration and excellent advice, and I've gotten to collaborate with a number of incredible women in health and wellness and the media world.
What's the coolest thing you've ever done?
One of the coolest things -- so cool -- was when I went to a Prince concert and caught Prince's guitar.
Business-wise, just really always being fearless -- deciding to open up my own practice without any fear.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I have a morning routine. I wake up around 5:30, and take a moment for myself -- meditate, go for a 10-minute walk outside, sit quietly with my coffee, anything like that -- and then, coffee. I dive into an hour and a half of work. I function my best in the morning. I'm most creative, and I just love that time.
I wake up my daughter and son at 7:15, and we have breakfast together. It's a big deal. I put out fruit, eggs, and it's kid time. They go to school, I work out, clear my head, then power back into work.
Generally, though, it can look completely different. Sometimes in the morning I could be doing anything from media, like run from a meeting with Today to a meeting with an investor, or go to a Skype call with my web team, or meet a nutrition school student, or write and edit our blogs for the week (I edit every single blog), meet my literary agent... There's a huge variety.
Tomorrow I have lunch with Rachael Ray, a meeting, a taping, an interview, a Skype call, writing. Then, there's kid stuff thrown in there at the same time: soccer game, squeezing in making dinner.
How would you describe your job?
Insanely busy, but controlled chaos. When building my company I had young kids and I felt like it was just chaotic. The general vibe is chaotic, frenetic, crazy, insanely busy -- but it's also extremely exhilarating. I get a high from my job and my career. I love what I do, it's so multi-faceted.
What's the best advice someone's ever given you?
- Hire slow, fire fast. To me, building a team and having my own business, I want to build my dream team. I surround myself with people who represent the culture, and to me having a certain type of person is so incredibly important.
- Know how to make decisions and move on. It comes down to being confident in yourself, making decisions, and not looking back.
- Take risks. Have no fear.
What does your career path look like?
I went to college and played sports, and I thought I wanted to work in the sports world, being a broadcaster. I almost took a job with NBC Sports logging NFL football, and got a job at Sports Illustrated in ad sales, which I knew nothing about -- but it was my foot in the door. I was not interested. I would read Health magazine because we used to get it for free, and I had been so interested in nutrition since I was a child.
I quit my job and started on my master's in health ed, and worked at Equinox, a hospital, and an online health and wellness business before the first crash of online businesses. I had gotten away from educating people, which was my passion, and started my own practice.
What's your favorite part of your job?
I love the science of nutrition, and I'm constantly learning and educating myself. There's something new to learn every day, and I love the unknown. There is just endless opportunity, and so inspiring in general -- and, hopefully, also inspiring to my kids.
What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?
- Blood, sweat and tears -- expect that.
- Expect super highs and super lows.
- Allow yourself five minutes to be upset about something, and then get right to your to-do list and cross off three things.
- Say yes, yes, yes to a lot of things to get yourself out there -- and then learn how to say no and be ultra-focused.
- Carve your own path.
