"We did not want to be drawn into a political controversy,” Aron told Variety. “We thought it might be counterproductive if we forced mask wearing on those people who believe strongly that it is not necessary. We think that the vast majority of AMC guests will be wearing masks."

“In my heart of hearts, I think we can manage AMC through this crisis,” said Aron. “There are no guarantees and nobody knows what coronavirus will look like in the winter or how long it will take to get a vaccine, but I can tell you that we have a very able management team here. We’re going to make every effort to make sure that AMC continues to be well positioned as a leader of the movie theater industry.”

Megaplex Theaters also received backlash for making masks optional for moviegoers. According to its website, "Face masks are required for Megaplex team members but are currently optional for guests in common areas of the theatre."

Cinemark Theatres posted an Instagram story on Friday writing that "wearing a mask in the auditorium during the movie is optional, unless local laws require masks at all times while in public places."

At Classic Cinemas guests are required to wear masks in the lobby and restrooms.

"We’ll require that all guests wear masks until they’ve reached their seat at all of our theatres across Illinois," the chain wrote on Twitter. 

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema also announced Friday on Twitter that "we will require that guests wear masks at the theater."
